The rabbit drop box is a large scale, permanent set, multi-catch trap. It consists of a fairly deep pit with a pivoted trapdoor above it and a tunnel to channel the rabbits over the trapdoor. The trapdoor falls away under the weight of a passing rabbit, dropping it into the pit or ‘box’.
Placed across a fence line this trap creates an artificial route that rabbits will begin to use regularly—at which point the trap can be ’switched on’ and will take a large number of rabbits very quickly. It takes a bit of setting up but once in place will work reliably over a long period.
For best results the trap should be installed at the same time that rabbit proof fencing is erected. If added to an existing fence line, allow the trap to settle in and then slowly block off all the other gaps that the rabbits use. |

I thought it worth including a few pictures of the project Steve in Yorkshire has been working on.
He built several traps which are now catching well. It’s worth pointing out that Steve has sited these tunnels in a quite unusual way—normally the tunnel goes through the fence. |
